Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Q: What are the licence requirements to start driving lessons?

A: To start your automatic driving lessons with me, you must meet the following legal requirements:

  • Hold a Valid UK Provisional Licence: You must have a valid UK provisional driving licence before getting behind the wheel. You can apply for this online via the GOV.UK website up to three months before your 17th birthday.

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 17 years old to drive on public roads (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment).

Bringing Your Licence to Your First Lesson.

On our very first session in Chester or Ellesmere Port, I will need to physically check your provisional photo card. I will also ask you to generate a temporary licence check code via the DVLA website so I can quickly verify your driving record. Don't worry—I'll send you a quick text reminder with a direct link on how to do this a few days before we meet!

Q: What are the eyesight requirements for learning to drive?

A: Your safety on the road is my absolute priority. Before you can start your first driving lesson, the DVLA requires you to pass a basic eyesight check.

The exact requirements are:

  • The 20-Metre Test: You must be able to read a standard UK number plate (printed after September 1, 2001) from a distance of 20 metres.

  • Corrective Lenses Are Welcomed: If you need prescription glasses or contact lenses to read the number plate at this distance, that is completely fine! You will just need to wear them on every single driving lesson and during your practical driving test.

What happens on your first lesson?

Don't let this stress you out! On our first session in Chester or Ellesmere Port, we will do a quick, informal check together. I'll just ask you to read a parked car's registration plate down the street before we pull away. It takes less than 30 seconds and helps ensure we are both safe, legal, and ready to roll.

Q: What is the DVLA? (And why will I need to use them?)

A: The DVLA stands for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. They are the UK government body responsible for maintaining the database of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain. Essentially, they are the organisation that decides who is legally allowed on the road.

As you learn to drive and progress toward passing your test, you will need to use the DVLA's secure online services for a few key steps:

  • Applying for Your Provisional Licence: This is your very first step. You will use the DVLA website to apply for your provisional driving photo card before you can book your first lesson.

  • Sharing your Driving Record (Licence Check Code): To ensure my driving school remains safe and legal, I require all students to provide a temporary "Check Code" before our first session. You will log into the DVLA system to generate this secure, 21-day code so I can quickly verify your provisional status.

  • Updating Your Personal Details: If you move house or change your name while learning to drive, you are legally required to notify the DVLA online to update your provisional licence address immediately.

  • Issuing Your Full Driving Licence: Once you pass your practical driving test in Chester or Ellesmere Port, your examiner will usually scan your provisional licence, and the DVLA will automatically print and mail your brand-new, full UK driving licence straight to your door!

Please Note: The DVLA handles your licence and records, but a separate agency called the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) handles booking and running your actual Theory and Practical driving tests!

Q: What is the DVSA? (And how are they different from the DVLA?)

A: While the DVLA handles your paperwork and driving licence, the DVSA stands for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. They are the UK government body responsible for maintaining road safety standards, regulating driving instructors, and—most importantly for you—conducting your driving tests.

You will interact with the DVSA for the two most exciting milestones of your driving journey:

  • Your Theory & Hazard Perception Test: You will use the DVSA’s official booking portal to schedule your theory exam.

  • Your Practical Driving Test: Once you are fully prepared and test-ready in our automatic hybrid car, we will use the DVSA system to book your practical test at your local test centre (such as the Chester driving test centre).

The Easiest Way to Remember the Difference:

  • DVLA = All about the Licence (Paperwork, medical checks, and photo cards).

  • DVSA = All about the Standards & Safety (Your driving instructor's official registration, your theory test, and your practical driving examiner).

  • Free door-to-door pickup and drop-off from your home, work, or college in Chester or Ellesmere Port.

Want to start with a trial lesson?

Nerves are completely normal, which is why you don’t have to commit to a massive package up front. You are welcome to book a single 90-minute trial session first to get a feel for the car, meet me, and see just how easy and stress-free automatic driving can be.

Q: How long are your lessons?

A: All of my standard automatic driving lessons are 90 minutes long. Through years of teaching nervous and anxious students, I have found that 90-minute sessions provide the absolute best environment for building confidence, making steady progress, and keeping your stress levels low.

Here is why 90-minute lessons work so much better than standard 1-hour or 2-hour slots:

  • Why 1-Hour Lessons Feel Too Rushed: In a standard 60-minute lesson, by the time I pick you up, we drive to a suitable training area, review your goals, practice, and drive back, the hour is practically gone. Anxious drivers often feel immense pressure to get things right immediately because they feel the clock ticking, which actually increases lesson anxiety.

  • Why 2-Hour Lessons Can Be Exhausting: While 2-hour lessons give you plenty of time, they can be incredibly mentally draining, especially if you suffer from driving anxiety. Concentrating intensely for 120 minutes behind the wheel can cause fatigue to set in, which can lower your confidence right at the end of the session.

  • The 90-Minute "Goldilocks Zone": A 90-minute lesson gives us the perfect amount of time to drive out to a peaceful location, settle your nerves, master a new skill, and securely wrap up the session without any rush. It is long enough to make massive progress every single week, but short enough that you will finish the lesson feeling accomplished and energized rather than completely wiped out.

Ready to try it for yourself? Experience the difference a zero-pressure, 90-minute session can make. Click the Availability button at the top of this page to start.

Q: Do you offer lessons in a manual car?

A: No, I specialise exclusively in automatic driving tuition and do not offer lessons in a manual vehicle.

While learning to drive a manual car is a fantastic option for many people, my driving school is dedicated entirely to those who want or need the specific benefits of an automatic. For many learners—especially those who suffer from driving anxiety, have physical health considerations, or simply want a faster, smoother path to independence—eliminating the clutch and gear stick is a complete game-changer.

Instead of juggling complex gear changes on busy local junctions, an automatic allows you to keep both hands on the wheel and focus 100% of your attention on the road ahead. It completely strips away the fear of stalling, letting you build real driving confidence in a fraction of the time.

If you've decided that a stress-free, automatic route is the right choice for your lifestyle, I am here to help you every step of the way!

Q: Do you offer crash courses?

A: As a general rule, I do not offer fast-track intensive courses to new starters. Packing a lifetime of driving skills into a single week rarely works well for nervous or anxious learners, as the immense pressure and fatigue can actually damage your confidence and increase test anxiety.

However, I do offer intensive blocks to my established pupils by special arrangement. If we have been working together and we both agree that a more compressed schedule suits your current confidence level, driving ability, and upcoming test goals, we can absolutely tailor a faster plan that works safely for you.

My mission is to ensure you feel secure, calm, and fully prepared behind the wheel—whether that takes a steady weekly routine or a uniquely structured, fast-track block of sessions later in your training.

Take the First Step at Your Own Pace:

Every confident driver starts with a single, zero-pressure lesson. Click the Availability button at the top of this page to get started.

Q: Do you offer refresher lessons?

A: Yes, absolutely! I specialize in helping full licence holders regain their driving confidence after a break from the road.

Whether you passed your test years ago and haven't driven since, have recently moved to the Chester or Ellesmere Port area, or have developed driving anxiety after an accident or a long break, my refresher sessions are entirely tailored to your pace. There is zero judgment and zero pressure.

We can focus on whatever specific areas are holding you back, including:

  • Overcoming motorway and dual-carriageway anxiety.

  • Mastering tricky multi-lane local roundabouts.

  • Perfecting your bay parking or parallel parking.

  • Practising specific routes, like your daily commute to work or the weekly supermarket run.

My goal is to help you fall in love with the freedom of driving again, using a calm, supportive approach that puts you firmly back in the driver’s seat.

Q: Do you offer discounts for block bookings?

A: Yes, I do! I offer a discounted rate when you secure your training momentum with a block booking.

While you are always welcome to pay as you go, choosing a block booking is the most cost-effective way to learn and guarantees your commitment to steady, weekly progress.

My current options are structured as follows:

  • Single Pay-As-You-Go Lesson (90 Mins): £79.50

  • Block Booking Discount (4 x 90-Minute Lessons): £300.00 total (This breaks down to just £50.00 per hour equivalent, saving you £18.00 across the block).

My recommendation for new starters:

You don’t have to commit to a major financial package right away if you are feeling nervous. I always recommend booking a single 90-minute trial lesson first. This gives you a low-risk, zero-pressure opportunity to experience the automatic hybrid car, test out my teaching style, and make sure you feel completely comfortable before deciding to upgrade to a discounted block!

Q: How do I pay?

A: To keep things as simple, secure, and modern as possible, I operate a cashless driving school. I do not accept cash payments.

Instead, I accept all major credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, making it incredibly easy for you or a parent to manage your lesson fees. You can pay using either of these convenient methods:

  • Online in Advance: You can safely pay for your single trial lesson or your discounted block booking online through my secure booking portal when scheduling your slot.

  • In the Car: I carry a secure mobile card reader in our automatic vehicle. This means you can easily tap or insert your card or phone at the end of your session.

Zero-Stress Booking:

Because everything is handled digitally, you will automatically receive a clear receipt sent straight to your phone or email for your records.

Q: What's your availability?

A: I offer structured, 90-minute automatic lessons throughout the week to accommodate busy work, school, and college schedules.

To help you plan your training routine, my standard weekly lesson slots are available across the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:00am, 11:15am, 1:45pm, 4pm.

  • Friday: 9:00am & 11:15am.

  • Saturday & Sunday: Closed

How to find and book your slot:

Because my schedule updates dynamically based on your location and driving goals, booking your first session is incredibly straightforward. My system will guide you through a couple of quick, simple questions to ensure we pinpoint the most convenient local slots for your schedule.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: I operate a strict 48-hour cancellation policy.

Because my schedule is highly optimized to ensure every student gets consistent, reliable weekly training slots, that time is reserved exclusively for you. If you need to cancel, reschedule, or change a planned 90-minute session, you must give me a minimum of 48 hours' notice.

  • If you give more than 48 hours' notice: We will simply move your session to the next available slot that suits you, with absolutely no penalty or fee.

  • If you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice: The full fee for that 90-minute lesson will be charged, or deducted from your pre-paid block.

This policy is in place simply because it is incredibly difficult to fill a specialised 90-minute slot at short notice, which means another student misses out on training time. Thank you so much for respecting my time and helping me keep our schedule running smoothly for everyone!

Q: Can I start and end my lessons at different locations (e.g., home, work, or college)?

A: Yes, absolutely! I want your driving lessons to fit seamlessly into your daily life. I am more than happy to pick you up from your workplace or college and drop you off back at home—or vice versa.

To make sure this works logistically without cutting into your valuable 90-minute training time, this flexibility is subject to two simple conditions:

  • Both locations must be within my coverage area (across our covered Chester and Ellesmere Port postcodes).

  • The travel time and distance must allow me to realistically make it to my next scheduled student on time.

If you want to arrange a split pickup and drop-off location, just let me know in advance so I can plan our route and make sure our schedule coordinates perfectly!

Theory & Hazard Perception Test

Q: Do I have to pass the theory and hazard perception test before starting driving lessons?

A: No, you do not! You can start your practical, 90-minute automatic driving lessons with me as soon as you have your provisional driving licence.

In fact, learning to drive while studying for your theory test is highly recommended. Combining your reading with real, hands-on experience in the car makes understanding road signs, dual-carriageway rules, and hazard perception much easier to memorise and understand.

Q: Can you help me prepare for my theory and hazard perception test?

A: Yes, absolutely. While most students prefer to study independently using apps, I am always here to support you. If you are struggling with a specific concept or feeling anxious about the exam, I offer dedicated theory tuition directly in the car during our sessions.

Whether you need help understanding complex junction rules or want to break down how to spot hazards early, we can dedicate part of your 90-minute lesson to mastering the theory until you feel completely confident.

Q: What are the pass marks for the theory and hazard perception elements of the test?

A: The test is split into two distinct parts, and you must pass both parts at the same time to get your certificate:

  • Part 1: Multiple-Choice Questions: You will answer 50 questions based on the Highway Code. The pass mark is 43 out of 50.

  • Part 2: Hazard Perception: You will watch 14 video clips containing developing hazards. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.

Q: How do I book, cancel or change the date of my theory and hazard perception test?

A: You should always book your test directly through the official government website to avoid paying hidden admin fees from third-party booking sites. Use the official DVSA links below to manage your booking:

Q: How long is the theory and hazard perception test pass valid for?

A: Your theory test certificate is valid for exactly 2 years from the date you pass it.

You must take and pass your practical driving test within this 2-year window. If your certificate expires before you pass your practical test, you will unfortunately have to book, pay for, and sit the theory exam all over again.

Practical Driving Test

Q: How do I book, cancel or change the date of my practical driving test?

A: You should only ever manage your practical test through the official GOV.UK website.

The DVSA has completely modernised its system to combat exploitation, meaning you must give a minimum of 10 full working days' notice to change or cancel a car practical test without losing your booking fee. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.

Additionally, you must avoid third-party "cancellation finder" apps or automated bots. The DVSA actively monitors the booking service and will cancel your driving test appointment or suspend your online booking access if they detect any unauthorised app or bot activity connected to your driving licence.

To keep your money, your personal data, and your test slot completely safe, always use the direct, official government links below:

Crucial Note for My Students: Please always check with me before booking or changing your practical test slot. We need to ensure that our automatic hybrid car is free for your chosen time, and that we both agree you are fully prepared to pass safely on the day!

Q: What driving test centres do you cover?

A: I cover the Chester Driving Test Centre (DTC) exclusively. I do not take students to any other test centres.

By specializing 100% on the local area, I can ensure that our 90-minute lessons give you absolute confidence on the exact road types, speed limit changes, and multi-lane roundabouts you will face on your big day.

However, I do not believe in exclusively memorising specific "test routes." Test routes are only a tiny snapshot of the road network, and they simply do not cover everything you need to become a truly safe, confident, independent driver. Instead, we will use the local roads across Chester, Deeside and Ellesmere Port to master real-world driving skills.

By learning how to handle our local hotspots properly, you will naturally be fully prepared for any route the examiner takes you on.

This approach ensures you don't just pass your test on the day—you finish your training completely ready to drive safely anywhere in the country!

Q: How does the practical driving test work?

A: The practical driving test takes around 40 minutes in total. It is not an interrogation; it is simply a straightforward assessment to prove you can drive safely and independently.

The test is strictly divided into 6 clear, predictable parts:

  • The Eyesight Check – At the very start, the examiner will ask you to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres. If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this, make sure you wear them, as failing this check means the test ends immediately.

  • The 'Tell Me' Safety Question – The examiner will ask you one "tell me" question, where you verbally explain how you would carry out a basic vehicle safety check (for example, explaining how you would check your tyre tread depths or oil levels).

  • The "Show Me' Safety Question – While you are actively driving, the examiner will ask you to operate a control to show you can do it safely (e.g., turning on the rear demister or washing the windscreen).

  • General Driving Ability – You will drive out onto a variety of local roads and junctions. The examiner will give you clear turn-by-turn directions. You will be asked to perform a few routine pull-ups on the left, a hill start, and potentially an emergency stop.

  • One Reversing Manoeuvre – From the following: forward bay park, reverse bay park, parallel park, pull over on the right and reverse back two car lengths.

  • Independent Driving – For the majority of the test, you will drive without turn-by-turn directions. Instead, you will follow a DVSA sat-nav (which the examiner will set up for you) or follow local traffic signs to a specific destination. Taking a wrong turning does not matter and you won't be penalised, as long as you do it safely!

Support on the Day.

To help ease your nerves, you have the right to bring me (your instructor) or an accompanying driver along to sit in the back and silently observe your test. Having a familiar face with you can be incredibly comforting.

If you prefer to go out with just the examiner, that is completely fine too! You still have the option to invite me over to listen to the final debrief at the end of the test so we can celebrate your pass together or clearly understand any feedback.

How are you marked?

The examiner records faults using a digital tablet. You can make up to 15 driving faults (often called 'minors') and still pass the test. However, committing a single serious or dangerous fault (a 'major') results in a fail.

Our Goal is Total Preparation.

By the time you sit in that test seat, we will have run through this exact sequence so many times in our 90-minute sessions that the official test will just feel like another calm drive around Chester!

Q: Do I have to drive perfectly to pass the practical driving test?

A: Absolutely not! Nobody is a perfect driver, and the driving examiners do not expect you to be flawless. They are simply looking to see that you are a safe, competent, and considerate road user.

You can actually make up to 15 driving faults (often called 'minor errors') during your 40-minute test and still walk away with a test pass certificate!

  • What is a Driving Fault (Minor)? This is a mistake that doesn't cause immediate danger to anyone else—such as stalling the car, missing a mirror check before signalling, or taking a wrong turn. As long as you handle the situation safely and calmly, you can make multiple minor mistakes and still pass.

  • What is a Serious/Dangerous Fault (Major)? This is a mistake that involves actual or potential danger to yourself, the examiner, or the public. Committing just one of these will result in a test failure.

Mistakes happen, and that is okay.

If you make a mistake during your test, the worst thing you can do is dwell on it or assume you have failed. Many students make a minor error, stay calm, keep driving safely, and are absolutely delighted to find out they passed at the end of the session.

Our 90-minute lessons are designed to build your resilience so that if a mistake does happen, you can reset instantly, maintain your composure, and finish your drive successfully.

Q: What car do I use on the practical driving test?

A: If you are learning with me, you will use our modern, dual-controlled automatic hybrid training vehicle for your test.

However, because I have a professional duty of care to protect public safety, my car, and your own confidence, you cannot automatically use the vehicle just because you have a test booked.

To use my car on test day, you must:

  • Consistently meet the safe driving standard during our regular 90-minute training sessions.

  • Successfully pass our in-car mock driving tests so we both know you are completely ready to face the examiner.

Using a car you are completely familiar with gives you the absolute best chance of passing on your first attempt!

Q: Can I use my own car for the practical driving test?

A: Yes, you can, but it is entirely your responsibility to ensure the vehicle meets the strict rules set by the DVSA. If your car fails to meet even one of these criteria, the examiner will cancel your test on the spot, and you will lose your booking fee.

Your personal car must:

  • Be completely roadworthy, fully taxed, have a valid MOT, and be properly insured for a practical driving test (you must check with your insurance company, as many standard learner policies explicitly exclude test-day use).

  • Have an extra interior rear-view mirror fitted for the examiner to use.

  • Have L-plates clearly displayed on the front and rear. (Not in the windows.)

  • Not have any dashboard warning lights showing (such as an airbag light).

  • Not be a banned vehicle model: The DVSA completely bans certain cars due to poor all-round visibility or insufficient rear space for the examiner.

You can find the exact list of requirements, banned models, and necessary gear on the official government page here: GOV.UK - Using your own car for your driving test.

Q: Can I rent your car for the practical driving test?

A: No. I do not rent my dual-controlled car out to members of the public who just want a vehicle for a test slot they have booked independently.

My automatic hybrid car is reserved strictly for my fully-trained, established pupils who have undergone structured lessons with me and have proven they can drive to a safe, test-ready standard. This policy is in place to protect my vehicle, uphold my professional reputation with the local Chester test centre, and ensure public safety on the roads.

Get Test-Ready the Right Way:

The safest, most stress-free path to passing your test is through consistent, high-quality preparation in a car you know inside and out. Click the Availability button at the top of this page to find out more.
